Feeling Unbalanced and Stuck in Life? Why Decluttering Can Help

Life is hard.  We get it and we've been there.  But!  What about when nothing in your life particularly feels hard necessarily, but maybe you feel "stuck" and have an inability to get centered and concentrate?  Maybe you lack energy and motivation, but you are unable to find the cause.  It may be because everything around you and in you is cluttered.

Every once in a while it is a good idea to sit down and do an evaluation.  What is junked up in my physical life, my relationships and within myself?  At first, it may be hard to see, but eventually there are ways to streamline our lives and the energy around us so that we not only get back on track, but allow for better and bigger experiences energetically to enter our space. The only way to do that, however, is to clean out what no longer serves us now or even in the future, especially if you already feel drawn to make changes in your life.  For the purposes of this blog, we will focus on just our physical spaces.

HOME
I ask you to first look around in your physical environments that you move in and out of on a daily basis; our homes, office space and cars.  That is the easiest place to start, because it is easier to see and does not take a whole lot of effort.  If you see something out of place, it's easier to pick it up and put it back right?  There isn't too much thought there.  Well, in this case it is time to dejunk your environment.  If there are old clothes hogging up closet space, pack them up and ship them out.  And yes, I do mean that pair of jeans that you've held onto with a lock grip because they are a size 10 and you swear you're going to get back in them one day.  If they have been in your closet for a year and your thigh still doesn't fit in them, it's time for them to go. I've done this.  It was a sad, sad day.  I got them for $5 on sale, but 4 years later I still was no closer to getting into them and every time I did look at them all I felt was failure that my thigh, in fact, still did not fit in them and it funked up my mood.  It didn't matter that they were a perfect shade of dark jean and my ass would've looked fabulous in them.  My ass wasn't in them and it was cluttering up my world.  They had to go.  I shed a tear and kept cleaning.  You can, too!

If you have papers laying around everywhere, it's time to go through them and send every single one that you do not need to the recycling bin or the shredder if they have personal information on them, and then make sure the ones that you do keep get filed away in a logical fashion.  In my office I had this space in the southeast corner where papers went to die including shot records for my boys, my divorce papers (boo!) and for some reason old coupons from the Sunday paper that were way older than I care to admit.  All of it was sorted through and taken care of.  Have too many books?  Shock, horror, gasp!  I, personally, can't imagine having too many books, but if you do and you plan on never reading them again, and they are taking up a ton of space, load them up and drop them off at your public library as a donation. Think of it as paying it forward and some other person will pick up the book that your eyes once graced the pages of, and will learn exactly what you did or loved exactly what you did.  I don't know, pick a feeling to make you feel better about it and then haul them outta there.  Trust me!  You will feel so much better.

Clean all rooms of your home.  That includes dusting, moping, vacuuming, etc.  In the kitchen, for example, make sure to get rid of all Tupperware that no longer have matching lids.  I don't know about you, but having a ton of plastic fly out at me every time I open a cabinet is a nightmare.  If you have children and they have outgrown toys and/or gadgets 10 years ago, but they still lay a dust-coated mess in a toy box they haven't touched with their precious little fingers?  They can go too.  Pack them all up and take them where your old clothes go or send them to recycling if they are plastic and kinda funky.  As a mom, you know what I mean by "funky".  They are the toys that time forgot and probably have remnants of lollipops or an apple that somehow got stuck like glue to the toy or maybe it is a doll and the hair got chopped off when your little girl decided she wanted to be a hairdresser, so now she is a Barbie that looks like she has a meth addiction.  Those are the toys and/or objects we don't want to send to the Goodwill or Salvation Army and potentially scare the hell out of another child with, so let's just set them outside with the trash.  Mkay?  Make sure to go through every drawer and cabinet, as well.  We don't want to leave anything behind that is unnecessary to have.  That idea is to declutter and remove anything that is unnecessary from our lives to make way for new energy and new things.

CAR
Your car.  This is a hot button issue for me even still.  I work from home so I rarely get in my car, but yet somehow there are times throughout the year that my car looks like I'm homeless and live out of it.  Let's get that car cleaned up ladies.  Get all the trash out of it, clean out the dust and child-funk (should you have that), and vacuum it.  String up an air freshener at the end, if you like.  For some reason, even above and beyond my house, when I clean out my car I feel like I did something.  ha.  It feels like a new car.  I could have wanted to trade it in the day before because I was sick of it, but then after a nice cleaning and a smelly good freshener, I change my mind.

WORK
Work space.  Do the exact same thing that you have done at home.  The object is to declutter your life. Anything that does not need to be on your desk or in your cabinets needs to go.  Make sure to dust down your desk top and computer, too.  File away needed papers and shred those that you do not.  For example, if you still have the Chinese takeout menu in your top drawer that shut down 2 years ago, it needs to go.  Ya feel me?  Has there been some organizational issues in your calendar or schedule that you would like adjusted, but you just have not dropped the hammer on it yet?  Now is the time to come up with a better plan to utilize your time better during the day. So cleaning up your personal work space won't stop making your boss a raging jerkface, but you will feel much better sitting down in your chair when everything is cleaned up, organized and completely functional.

You will not believe how much, in most cases, you will get rid of when you do just these three steps and then how much easier it is for you to not only function and concentrate, but to once again move in a positive direction for yourself and allow abundance in.  Just these three things will allow you to become much more closer to being unstuck if not completely unstuck.  We do not always think that clutter or objects taking up space around us causes these blocks, but they do.  Subconsciously we know that things need to be done even if they aren't staring us in the face and can hinder more than we think.

To stop yourself from becoming overwhelmed or to remain on track, write down at least two things you would like to accomplish that day if the task feels overwhelming to get decluttered from your life.  If you have a calendar or a reminder app on your phone, use it.  This doesn't have to be a huge undertaking and done in one day.  We are women!  We are already busy.  So, honor yourself by saying that you will do 1 or 2 things with the goal of completion in a time frame that feels good to you.  However, trust me when I say this, the quicker you declutter the better you will feel.  Good luck!
