Ask an Expert: MAC PRO Makeup Artist, Paula Q

Recently I got to chat with my good friend, professional makeup artist, Paula Q. She has been a freelance makeup artist for years and has worked on some of the industry's most beautiful and sought after faces.

Paula Q. has made MAC Cosmetics her home in the past few years. She enjoys working with people and providing a service that helps women feel empowered by accentuating their personal beauty and style. Another aspect of working for MAC is not just because they are one of the leading cosmetic companies in their industry world-wide but they give back and are socially conscious.

I've had the pleasure of personally working with Paula in past projects and she is one of the few that "understood" my skin tone. ( So during our recent chat, I got the opportunity to ask her a few questions that me and my other two lovely cohorts at 3 Chicks and a Couch put together for this segment titled "Ask an Expert"

It all kind of went like this...

What do you recommend for a person whose face breaks out when using any foundation, powder or BB cream? Is there a magic formula? First you have to identify why you are breaking out. Identifying your skin type is very important in choosing a foundation, powder or BB cream. You might be sensitive to certain ingredients and that could be the cause of breakouts. Also, it is very important to use the right skin care with your foundation, powder or BB cream. Primers are very important!

What would you recommend for someone who feels they're just not good at makeup but want to get more involved in wearing it? This day and age it is so easy to get makeup advice and tips. First, you should visit a MAC counter and have a makeup artist show you what basics you need to start with. Then, go on YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr and the other countless social media sites and watch videos or read up on it. Sometimes I get makeup inspiration by scrolling through IG or Facebook and when I like something I usually share it on my Facebook page. You won’t be an expert overnight, take baby steps, start with the basics and then when you feel comfortable you can try different things.

How to ensure that false lashes stay on? I have always used Duo adhesive. It is waterproof and should last the entire day.

What 3 beauty cosmetics should women have in their make-up bag? Mascara, lipstick or lipgloss and bronzer. I feel like these are the top three and will definitely help you out in an emergency. For example, you just left the gym and decided to go grab a smoothie. On your way out of the car you notice a really hot guy and realized Sh*t! I don’t have any makeup on, in a snap you can apply some lipgloss, brush a bit of bronzer to enhance that post-workout glow and some mascara to open up your eyes a bit.

What lipstick shades (brands included) do you find universally flattering on all women? Having worked for MAC for so long I am pretty biased and MAC obsessed. I love all our lipsticks … Ruby Woo is my number one favorite. It is a vivid blue red and I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t look great in it. Other colors that look good on most women are Twig, Half & Half, Crème Cup, Kinda Sexy, Amorous and Ravishing.
