Okay, okay. I have a
confession. Well it’s not so much of a
confession in so much that I’m about 20 years away from probably becoming the
crazy dog lady. You know the old joke,
“I ordered the cat lady starter kit”?
Well, that’s me, but with dogs. I
love, love, love my Pit, Laney.
Lu-hu-huv her. She is a red nose
pit that the boys and I saved from the SPCA a few years back. Like most pure bread Pit’s, she has these
awful allergies where she is either itching and licking herself to absolute
friggin death or she gets little ear or eye infections. It is pretty much either one for her. I started off on a mission of how to start to
feed her whole foods and/or supplements, not from a bag, and what I can do to
help her. Look, I’m going to be honest
here. I may have two boys already, but
Laney is my daughter. I don’t feel alone
in this because I know there are many like me.
Along my travels I found out a lot of information first
about coconut oil. I’ve heard so many
good things about coconut oil and I always have it on hand. Coconut oil is like the MacGuyver of oils as
far as I’m concerned. Nonetheless,
coconut oil is safe to give to our canine children**. Some of the benefits I found so far for our
furbabies are:
· *Improves or eliminates bad breath.
· *Helps to control dry skin and dandruff.
· *Improves arthritis or other joint and ligament
problems.
· *Helps with weight loss.
· *Helps to treat fleas.
· *Soothes hot spots.
· * Helps to control body odor.
· *Conditions the skin and coat.
The correct dosing for your furbabies is a ¼ teaspoon for
every 10 lbs. twice a day. Laney is
about 40 lbs. right now so I give her a whole teaspoon twice a day. I have been doing this now for a week and I
have indeed notice that she doesn’t seem to itch as much and her breath is
better. I love this dog. I do, but holy mother of God her breath
smells like she went to the county dump, ate it all and then pranced her red
ass all the way home to breathe on me.
Forrealzies. So, this has been a
very nice benefit. It’s still winter so
I’m waiting to see what might happen in the summer when fleas and hot spots can
become an issue.
If you, too, have given your pet coconut oil, I would love
to hear your stories! Also, if you found
a good way to feed your fur-child a natural, whole feeds diet, I would also
love to hear what you’re using and how it is working.
**Disclaimer: Do not
blindly take any advice on what is the perfect fit for your animal without
speaking with your veterinarian. My vet
approved the information that I found, but every animal is different so be sure
that you know what is right for him/her before you undertake this advice.
