Okay ladies, we need to have a serious talk. I don't care how old you are, you need to be educated about lubricant. Most people who are younger don't ever think they need it during their sexual encounters and a lot of people in general seem to believe that if you need it, there's something wrong with you.
I'm here to tell you that those beliefs are bullshit.
Nobody gets huffy when their car needs lubrication, why should you be any different? Image via auto.howitworks.com |
There are a number of reasons why women don't produce enough natural lubrication. Menstrual cycle, medicines, stress, diet and the amount of annoying habits your partner has can all play a part in lack of proper lubrication. If you don't believe me, believe SCIENCE (click here for the Sex Doctor's answer on why lubrication is important). Regardless of the reason, proper lubrication helps with a number of things, including INCREASED ENJOYMENT OF SEX (and really, that should be the only reason you need). Even if you don't have an issue with lubrication, the first two or three attempts at penetration can sting a little if you're not completely ready for it.
I strongly believe every woman should have a good lubricant in her intimate arsenal. I have heard a lot of women say that they don't like lubes because they are sticky or too thick or make them feel gross. When I ask what kind they're using, it's almost always something from the pharmacy like KY. Most of the time the lubes you get at the pharmacy are going to be similar to surgical lube. You know, that gross stuff they use at the gynecologist? Yeah, that's not made for sexy time.

The other benefit of a water based lubricant is that it will absorb into your skin after a while so the cleanup is not as, uh, "splooshy" as some other lubes. And as a bonus, it will help your vaginal tissue stay healthy and moisturized, so there will be less chance of dryness.
Water-based lubes do have their drawbacks. As mentioned, they will absorb after a while, so they're not great for marathon sessions, unless you're going to re-apply. They're also not optimal for back-door action because of this.

the woman (they are thicker and the molecules are larger, so they provide a buffer between the "penetrator" and the "penetratee".

REALLY well). A silicone substitute lube will be somewhere between the consistency of a true silicone lube and a water-based lubricant. They are great for all-around usage, honestly.
Try out several and see which ones work for you. I was never "Team Lube" prior to my stint selling relationship enhancement products, but once I got the facts about lube, I proudly wave my lube-covered flag to anyone who will listen and I believe once you find the right lube for you, you'll be a convert too. As always, feel free to ask any questions!
XOXO, Katz
