The Book That Changed My Life

Beaten down by a crappy breakup and a not so great financial situation, I was in a funk when somehow this little slice of magic came into my life.  I'm not sure initially how I heard about it, but this book changed my life.   Well, maybe not my entire life, but it definitely changed my outlook significantly.

Yes, it's a self-help book.  Yes, I hate them normally. I used to find self-help people to be corny and fronting a manufactured positivity that made me want to punch them in the face.

And then I read this book.  Jen Sincero's book, "You are a BADASS" includes the following snippets of genius:
“You are responsible for what you say and do. You are not responsible for whether or not people freak out about it.”

“Never apologize for who you are. It lets the whole world down.”

“It’s just as easy to believe we’re awesome as it is to believe we’re giant sucking things.”

and my personal favorite...

“There’s nothing as unstoppable as a freight train full of fuck-yeah. ― Jen Sincero

One of the things that this book taught me, above and beyond anything else, is that anyone can find a self-help book that fits them if the author phrases things in a way that makes sense to the reader.  There were other take-aways from this book, but for the purpose of this post, this is the most relevant.

Sincero's writing style speaks to my specific mentality of snark and "hell-yeah".  That might be why this particular book got through to me.  I've learned not to completely discount the self-help section and consider everything as completely hokey.  These writers have gone through it.  They have stories to tell and if you find someone who speaks your language, you may just find yourself improving your life or your outlook.
This is my "badass" face

I won't spoil the book, but know that I recommend it to everyone who asks for reading suggestions.  It's akin to the book "The Secret", but for an audience that may need a little more edge to their law of attraction.

Let me know your thoughts and if you've read this book or are interested in discussing it.  I hope it gets your weekend off to an awesome start.  Remember, YOU are a BADASS!

XOXO, Katz
