I have been actively looking into more eco friendly ways of running my household. It seems like the older I get, the less chemicals I want in or on my body, and I truly do worry about the state of the environment. On that quest, what did I do? I hit the internet and Pinterest. I mean, clearly that is what eco-conscious people do; they load up their browser and scroll though Pinterest, right? No? Maybe? Well this chick did and I found one idea that blew my mind and I had to try it for myself.
First, is the idea of using plain white vinegar instead of fabric softener. When I read it I didn't necessarily believe it. I thought "no way in hell. My clothes are going to wreak". I figured I can be eco-conscious and NOT smell of vinegar. Surely, there had to be a better way. However, in my quest to at least try it, I did just that. I tried it.
I also saw that instead of dryer sheets you can roll up aluminum foil into balls and it will remove the static from your clothes. Again, I did just that. I rolled up 3 balls of aluminum foil and threw them into my dryer.
Well, it freakin worked. It so worked! My clothes did not stink at all and my clothes were not the slightest bit staticky. Is that a word, staticky? Oh well, they weren't any of that word I just made up. Maybe I need to look into a nice recycled Word-of-the-Day. hahahahaha
1/2 cup of white vinegar added to your rinse cycle or put in the spot in your washer where you would put fabric softener. That's it! It's a completely renewable source, you're not throwing dryer sheets into the trash so they end up in the landfill, and comparably using white vinegar is dirt cheep compared to bottles of fabric softerner. My clothes also did not smell at all like vinegar. I was concerned that it would at first, because when I took the clothes from the washer to the dryer I did smell a faint smell of vinegar. However, by the time I took them out of the dryer they did not smell at all. Now, some really like the smelly goodness (another fantastic word I just made up. Who put the calender on order?) and you will be losing that, but it doesn't bother me at all.
3 aluminum balls. Take a hefty sheet of aluminum and roll it into a ball. Do that three times. Throw those suckers into the dryer. Voila! You will remove all static cling from your clothes. You can reuse them over and over again. Also, it's another advantage over having dryer sheets. It's fantastic. Once the aluminum balls are spent, you can simply put them in recycling. From what I understand you get a pretty good "shelf life" out of them, however.
And this was all so easy to do! I really didn't have to change up anything except to now stop spending money on fabric softener and dryer sheets.
I wish I could tell you that I was merely pleased that this worked, but I was basically freaking out like I just solved world hunger. It's almost embarrassing that this is how I get my kicks. But there you have it, vinegar adds a new use in my house and so does aluminum foil.
